The reference dose values of Luxembourg are based on the European Guidelines on Quality Criteria for Computed Tomography EUR 16262 of the year 1999. Today the reference dose values of 1999 are not representative, because in the last years the technical development of computed tomography was a rapid progress. Before new refernence dose values are fixed, an optimisation is performed to ensure optimal dose values for the most important protocols.
Therefore the deployed protocols for the different standard examinations have to be reviewed. A radiologist specialized in radiation dose optimisations has carried out this task for each radiological unit in Luxembourg throughout 2008. He reviewed the protocol used in the hospital and suggest optimisations without sacrificed diagnostic accuracy.
